Easy NINO Q&A

  • What is the National Insurance Number (NINO)?

It’s a number that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) allocate you so that they can track your tax and national insurance contributions and ensure you are paying the correct amount. The number is unique to you, it never changes and you keep it for your whole life. If you call the DWP or Her Majesty Revenue & Customs (HMRC) they will ask you for your NINO before talking to you and answering your questions.
  • Do I really need one? Friends have told me that they worked for years without a NINO.

It’s true that in the past many people didn’t bother with a NINO, they used temporary numbers and claimed back tax at the end of the year. This is no longer the case; you may work for a short period of time without a permanent NINO and during this time it’s possible that you will be over taxed. At the end of the financial year you can claim back any tax you have overpaid, but only if you have a NINO. Without a NINO Her Majesty Revenue Customs\ (HMRC) will not process a tax refund claim.
  • Can I apply for one before I arrive in the UK?

No, the laws and policy around the NINO require you to be in the UK with a reasonable need and right to apply for the NINO.
  • Your Kickstart Package says that it comes with help in obtaining the National Insurance number but then you also sell an ‘Easy National Insurance Number service’, what’s the difference?

Correct, as part of the Kickstart package we offer you the standard information you need to do your own NINO application. Essentially we point you in the right direction and you do the calling around, completing forms, booking meeting and attending interviews. Alternatively, we offer an additional service whereby we make the process a lot easier.
  • What happens if I forget or lose my NI Number?

If you lose or can’t remember your NIN there are a few places you can usually check to find it. Your pay slips will normally display your NIN, as will a tax document from your employer like a P45 or P60 or a tax return from HMRC. If you still can’t find it, your last resort is to complete a form CA5403 available on the HMRC website to request a new NIN card.
  • What is a National Insurance Contribution is it like tax?

National Insurance contributions are compulsory deductions taken by your employer from your earnings and given to the UK pension scheme. These contributions are separate to regular income tax; they are very similar to the compulsory superannuation payments in Australia. The UK pension scheme will use these funds to pay out to retired UK citizens eligible to draw a pension.
